當一個男人強姦另一個男人的時候，強姦的本質不是性欲而是暴力的事實變得十分明顯了。有關這一事實，《聖經》裏羅德的故事就已經顯露無遺。當羅德把兩個異鄉男人（實際上是兩個天使）藏在自己的屋簷下的時候，所多瑪城裏的每一個居民，“年輕人和老人，所有的人一個也不例外地都包圍了羅德的房舍”，並且要求羅德把他的客人交給他們來強姦（創世紀第19章第4節）。顯而易見，《聖經》裏並沒有暗示所有的這些市民“一個也不例外地”由同性性欲所驅使。而是出於邪惡的動機，他們以最可能的橫蠻方式通過違背待客的原則，想要證明他們憎恨這兩個異鄉人。（出於這個原因，他們也拒絕了羅德主動提出的不要強姦這兩個異鄉男人，而是強姦他自己的女兒的提議。）強姦是表達輕蔑的一種最強烈的行徑，是征服的最終形式。所以，在古代，獲勝的軍隊著重要強姦戰敗的敵軍士兵。敵軍士兵的全然屈辱給勝利畫上了一個完滿的句號。

The fact that the essence of rape is not sexual desire, but violence, becomes quite evident when men rape other men. This is already clear in the story of Lot in the Bible. When he gave two male strangers (actually angels) shelter under his roof, every inhabitant of the city of Sodom, “both young and old, all the people down to the last man surrounded the house” and demanded that he deliver his guests to them to be raped (Genesis 19:4). Obviously, there is no suggestion that all of these citizens “down to the last man” were driven by homosexual desires. Instead, in their wickedness they wanted to demonstrate their hatred of strangers by violating the laws of hospitality in the most outrageous manner possible. (For this reason, they also refused Lot’s offer to rape his daughters instead.) Rape was the strongest expression of contempt, the ultimate form of subjugation. Therefore, victorious ancient armies made a point of raping defeated enemy soldiers. Their utter humiliation made the victory complete.
