有人估計在所有成年強姦受害人中有超過10%是男性。但是，有充分的跡象表明大多數男性強姦受害人從來也沒有報案。要獲得確切的統計資料是極為困難的，因為男性常常不願意告訴任何人他們被人強姦了。其中有許多人害怕被誣衊為同性戀者，而且指望得到行政當局、家人、朋友和熟人的同情是微乎其微的。當人們面對男性強姦的案例時，許多人往往傾向于“責備受害人”，責備男性受害人甚至更甚于責備女性受害人。

對性成熟男性的強姦會發生在戶外的場所：街頭巷尾、停車場、或荒地、或偏遠地區、或汽車裏（當涉及到搭便車者的時候）。十幾歲的少年成為受害人的危險高於成年男性。

對男性的強姦通常採取強迫口交和/或肛交的方式。一些罪犯會強迫男性受害人屈從多種性行為方式，而且，包括出示刀具、手槍和其它武器等這種人身威脅較為常見。男性強姦受害人與女性強姦受害人同樣遭受嚴重程度大致相當的傷害。

在一些非常罕見的案例，女人也會強姦男人，例如用槍逼著的情形下強迫男人為她們進行口交。

It has been estimated that up to 10% of all adult rape victims are male. However, there are strong indications that most male rapes are never reported. Exact figures are difficult to come by, because males are often reluctant to tell anyone that they have been raped. Many of them fear being branded as homosexual and, in general, expect little sympathy from the authorities, their families, friends, and acquaintances. Even more than in cases of female rape, when confronted with male rape, many people tend to “blame the victim”.
Most rapes of sexually mature males occur outdoors in back alleys, parks, or deserted lots, or in remote areas, or in automobiles, when a hitchhiker is involved. Male teenagers are in greater danger of becoming victims than adult males.
Male rape usually takes the form of forcible oral and/or anal intercourse. Some offenders force the victim to submit to several sexual acts, and physical threats, including the show of knives, guns, and other weapons are not uncommon. Male rape victims are also more likely than female victims to sustain serious injuries.
In some very rare cases, women have raped men, for example by forcing them at gunpoint to perform oral intercourse on them.
