在同一个文化体系中，随着岁月的推移，性常态的标准也可以发生变化。因而，在今天，一个特定社会可以认可相当大的正常性行为象谱范围。然而，历史学研究也许会显示在100年前，这个“常态”的象谱谱系曾经被限定得狭窄得多。甚至进一步追溯历史，然后，我们可以发现2000年前，这个范围甚至曾经比当今宽泛得多。下面的图标大体上适合欧洲这个西方社会的这一演变过程[1]。

Standards of sexual normality may also vary within the same culture over time. Thus, a certain society may today recognize a rather wide segment of the behavioral spectrum as normal. However, a historical investigation may show that, 100 years ago, this segment of “normality” was much more narrowly defined. Looking back even further in history, one may then discover that, 2000 years ago, the segment was much wider than it is even today: The following graph roughly fits the case of Western Europe.
