文化脚本定义什么是“性的”和什么是好的“性”或什么是坏的“性”。这同样也意味着，文化脚本为适当的性别角色行为、性欲行为和生殖行为定义性的“常态”，即定义性的标准。然而，这些定义从一种文化体系到另一种文化体系和从一段历史时期到另一段历史时期会发生着改变。因而，性常态(sexual normality)可以在一个文化体系里被定义得非常狭窄、在另一个文化体系里略为宽泛和再一个文化体系里宽泛得多。

Cultural scripts define what is “sexual” and what is good or bad about it. This also means that they define sexual “normality” i.e. the standard for the proper gender role and erotic and reproductive behaviors.  However, these definitions vary from one culture and historical period to another. Thus, sexual normality may be very narrowly defined in one society, a little more widely in another, and much more widely in still another:
