Recent years have seen the development and expansion of several electronic forms of prostitution. There are many reasons for this, but the most obvious are these:

- The ongoing “electronic revolution” with phone, cell phone, picture phone, internet, and web cam.
- The
fear of infection with HIV/AIDS and the “safety” of “distance sex”.
- The increasing
social isolation of many individuals in modern society.
- The
availability of electronic prostitution everywhere, even in places that otherwise offer no opportunities for commercial sex.

In combination, these factors are driving a growing industry that has not yet reached its peak. However, it already raises new questions about the nature of the relationship between prostitutes and their customers.
