在同一個文化體系中，隨著歲月的推移，性常態的標準也可以發生變化。因而，在今天，一個特定社會可以認可相當大的正常性行為象譜範圍。然而，歷史學研究也許會顯示在100年前，這個“常態”的象譜譜系曾經被限定得狹窄得多。甚至進一步追溯歷史，然後，我們可以發現2000年前，這個範圍甚至曾經比當今寬泛得多。下面的圖示大體上適合歐洲這個西方社會的這一演變過程[1]。

Standards of sexual normality may also vary within the same culture over time. Thus, a certain society may today recognize a rather wide segment of the behavioral spectrum as normal. However, a historical investigation may show that, 100 years ago, this segment of “normality” was much more narrowly defined. Looking back even further in history, one may then discover that, 2000 years ago, the segment was much wider than it is even today: The following graph roughly fits the case of Western Europe.
