当一个男人强奸另一个男人的时候，强奸的本质不是性欲而是暴力的事实变得十分明显了。有关这一事实，《圣经》里罗德的故事就已经显露无遗。当罗德把两个异乡男人(实际上是两个天使)藏在自己的屋檐下的时候，所多玛城里的每一个居民，“年轻人和老人，所有的人一个也不例外地都包围了罗德的房舍”，并且要求罗德把他的客人交给他们来强奸(创世纪第19章第4节)。显而易见，《圣经》里并没有暗示所有的这些市民“一个也不例外地”由同性性欲所驱使。而是出于邪恶的动机，他们以最可能的横蛮方式通过违背待客的原则，想要证明他们憎恨这两个异乡人。(出于这个原因，他们也拒绝了罗德主动提出的不要强奸这两个异乡男人，而是强奸他自己的女儿的提议。)强奸是表达轻蔑的一种最强烈的行径，是征服的最终形式。所以，在古代，获胜的军队着重要强奸战败的敌军士兵。敌军士兵的全然屈辱给胜利画上了一个完满的句号。

The fact that the essence of rape is not sexual desire, but violence, becomes quite evident when men rape other men. This is already clear in the story of Lot in the Bible. When he gave two male strangers (actually angels) shelter under his roof, every inhabitant of the city of Sodom, “both young and old, all the people down to the last man surrounded the house” and demanded that he deliver his guests to them to be raped (Genesis 19:4). Obviously, there is no suggestion that all of these citizens “down to the last man” were driven by homosexual desires. Instead, in their wickedness they wanted to demonstrate their hatred of strangers by violating the laws of hospitality in the most outrageous manner possible. (For this reason, they also refused Lot’s offer to rape his daughters instead.) Rape was the strongest expression of contempt, the ultimate form of subjugation. Therefore, victorious ancient armies made a point of raping defeated enemy soldiers. Their utter humiliation made the victory complete.
