Reasons for Anal Intercourse

Heterosexual anal intercourse, while not common, is not as rare as is often believed. Depending on the cultural background of the participants, it is practiced for three main reasons:

1. To preserve the female’s “virginity”,
2. to avoid pregnancy,
3. for the sake of erotic variety.

These reasons may, of course, also be present in combination.

The first reason is likely to decisive for couples in many “traditional” societies that condemn sexual intercourse between unmarried partners. Such societies may insist that females enter marriage with an unbroken hymen as proof that they are sexually untouched and “innocent”. For unmarried couples anal intercourse is one obvious alternative.

The second reason is likely to predominate in societies or situations where contraceptives are unavailable. In this case, a couple may regard anal intercourse as an alternative to coitus, because it cannot cause pregnancy.

The third reason may appeal to couples who vary their lovemaking and who like to experiment with many possible forms of physical intimacy.
