Vaginal Ring

Contraception

Methods of Contraception: Contraceptive Methods for Women

Vaginal Ring
The vaginal ring is a flexible plastic ring about 5 cm (2 inches) in diameter and 0,3 cm (1/8 inch) thick. It is inserted into the vagina for 3 weeks out of the month, then replaced with a new ring every month. Like the pill and the patch, the ring contains both an estrogen and a progestin. These hormones are absorbed through the vaginal walls. The ring usually cannot be felt during sexual intercourse and does not interfere with it. Since there are some possible side effects, a doctor’s advice and supervision are important.
Effectiveness: Very effective

Inserting the vaginal ring:
The flexible ring is squeezed together (left) and then inserted deep into the vagina (right).
