Methods of Contraception: Contraceptive Methods for Women

Implants
Contraceptive implants are available in many countries and under different brand names. Depending on the product, they consist of one or several small, matchstick-size rods that are implanted in the upper arm under local anesthesia. They continuously release hormones similar to those used in contraceptive pills and thus prevent possible conceptions. They can stay in place for several years. This is their great advantage for women who have trouble taking their pills every day. On the other hand, implants are not for every woman, and some versions have had unpleasant side effects. In short, a doctor’s advice and supervision are essential for this method.
Effectiveness: Very effective for women weighing less than 70 kg (150 pounds), somewhat less for women weighing more.
Effectiveness: almost 100 percent.
