Methods of Contraception: Contraceptive Methods for Women

Injections
In many countries intramuscular contraceptive injections are available. Hormones are injected in the buttocks or arms and are repeated either once a month or every three months, depending on the hormones and doses injected. Deposited in muscle tissue, they are absorbed slowly and thus keep preventing pregnancies for weeks or months at a time. However, just as in oral contraceptives, there may be some unpleasant side effects for some women, and therefore these injections should not be used indiscriminately. A careful medical examination and a doctor’s supervision are necessary. This method is not for every woman.
Effectiveness: Very effective
