在發現人類卵細胞和精子細胞之前，我們不可能完全理解人類的生殖現象。因而，直到19世紀逝去好久了，醫學權威們儘管對懷孕和妊娠懷有各種各樣的富有幻想的推測，但是對於其最終大白於天下的真相仍然知之甚少。惟有顯微鏡的發明以及隨後接連的該發明技術的改進，才激勵科學家們探測生殖的事實真相。光這一探索過程就經歷了近150年。

Human reproduction could not be fully understood before the discovery of human egg and sperm cells.
Thus, until well into the 19th century, medical authorities entertained various fanciful theories about conception and pregnancy that had little to do with the truth as it finally emerged. It was only the invention and subsequent continued improvement of the microscope that enabled scientists to ascertain the facts, a process that took nearly 150 years.
