According to Cerulli (1956:p23[1]; Mbiti, [1990:p133])[2] courtship and marriage takes place “at an early age” since no payment or gifts are given or expected. This possibly begins when children leave the parents home and village at puberty to go to the village of the maternal uncle, to safeguard them from a polygamous system (Cerulli, p22, 23-4).
