Betrothal takes place in childhood, marriage is to await puberty and initiation (Prins, 1952:p123[1]; Kyewalyanga, 1977:p43). The girl is not informed, and she is kidnapped by four men, bridegroom included, who are all allowed to cohabit with her. “This will be the first time the future husband is allowed to do so, as he has had to avoid her until then, though premarital intercourse is always allowed between members of corresponding age groups of opposite sex”.
