Medicine and Morality

Critical Introduction - The Meaning of Sexual Health

What is Sexual Health?

Medicine and Morality

The present power of medical experts as moral arbiters did not result from some dark conspiracy. It was more or less forced upon them by the larger social changes taking place in modern times. These changes gradually weakened the influence of the church and created a moral vacuum that only medical science could fill. There is no better illustration of this than our modern question: "What is sexual health?" In earlier centuries we would have asked instead: "What is moral virtue?"
