4. What are the symptoms?

The first symptoms appear sometime within a month after the infection, but can also develop several weeks later. They consist of one or more bumps at the site where the bacterium entered the body, usually somewhere on the female or male sex organs. However, they can also appear inside the mouth or around the face if the transmission occurred during oral intercourse. Correspondingly, in the case of anal intercourse, the anal region and the rectum may also be affected. Such a bump may or may not itch or hurt, but in any case it turns into an open sore that slowly becomes larger, oozes and may even bleed. Untreated, the disease spreads inside the body, leading to new swellings under the skin and ever larger lesions. In females, the cervix, uterus, Fallopian tubes, and ovaries may eventually be affected.
