4. What are the symptoms?
The presence of pubic lice will soon be noticed since they cause a persistent itching in the pubic area. However, they may also infest other hairy parts of the body like the armpits, the male chest or the beard (but usually not the scalp).

5. How is it diagnosed?
Small as they are, pubic lice can be seen with the naked eye. Their bites usually leave little bluish marks on the skin.

6. How is it treated?
The condition is treated with a prescription item, Kwell (ointment, lotion, or shampoo), or a permethrin cream rinse (Rid). In either case, a doctor’s advice should be sought and followed (especially important for pregnant women). Before using any medication, a hot bath and extensive washing with soap are important. Wearing clean clothing afterwards will prevent re-infestation. Clothing and linen which may be infested should be dry cleaned or laundered and dried in a hot dryer.

7. How can it be prevented?
The best protection against this kind of infestation is strict personal hygiene and the avoidance of unclean towels, bed linens, and clothing. Obviously, a condom offers no protection in this case, since it does not cover the pubic hair.
