先天性腎上腺增生性肥大(Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia,
CAH) |
照字面的意思來理解，醫學術語“先天性腎上腺增生性肥大”的意思是“生來的腎上腺過度增生”。它是指位於腎臟上方的腎上腺的功能障礙並尤其產生促使機體生長的各種各樣的激素。(先天性腎上腺增生性肥大是“腎上腺性徵異常綜合征”的先天型，在男女都可能發生，這種綜合征的其他名稱還有“腎上腺生殖器綜合征”和“腎上腺變態綜合征”等——譯者注。)然而，這種特殊的功能障礙病人身體產生某些激素的量並不理想。他們的腎上腺週邊部分(稱為“腎上腺皮質”)增厚(即“增生性肥大”)，而且不能適當地發揮功能。其結果是隨著胎兒期和隨後的兒童期的發育以及成年期，其激素分泌機制受到損害。這能夠導致嚴重的健康問題，其中就有某種類型的中間性的健康問題。

The medical term
“congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH)” - literally translated - means “inborn adrenal overgrowth”. It refers to a
malfunction of the adrenal glands which lie next to the kidneys and produce various hormones essential for the body’s growth. In this particular case of malfunction, however, they do not produce the optimal amounts of certain hormones. Instead, the outer part of the adrenal gland (called
“adrenal cortex”) thickens (i.e. becomes
“hyperplastic”) and cannot function properly. As a result, the hormones production is impaired, and with it the development of the fetus, and later that of the child and adult. This can cause severe health problems and, among other things, some form of intersexuality.
