Pain During Sexual Intercourse

5.4 PAIN DURING SEXUAL INTERCOURSE

For a healthy human being, the purely physical aspect of sex is usually not much of a problem. After some initial uncertainty and experimentation, the sexual response simply becomes another bodily function which requires no further worry or analysis. However, there are exceptions. Some men and women, for example, experience pain during sexual intercourse. Obviously, such an experience can be very frustrating and even force some people into complete sexual abstinence. Fortunately, a careful examination by a doctor can very often discover the cause and thus lead the way to successful treatment. The following paragraphs deal with the main physiological causes of pain during sexual intercourse. (Possible psychological causes are discussed in the section on "Sexual Dysfunction/')
