Goldman (1963:p369)[1]: “[…] coitus was thought to be required by all just pre-pubescent children to promote physical growth. Young boys were told by their older age-group, “you better catch a woman pretty soon or you won’t grow”. It was also believed that defloration was necessary to bring on the first menses in girls”.
