Mechanical Devices In one form or another, men have long used a relatively simple device to hold an erection: A so-called constriction ring applied at the base of the penis is expected to prevent the blood from flowing back out of the erectile tissue (corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum). This can be achieved in many cases, at least partially. There are different designs and sizes of such rings available.
Another device perfected in recent years, is a special vacuum pump, i.e. a hollow tube that is placed over the limp penis. Pumping the air out of this tube creates a vacuum around the penis and thus produces an erection. How long this erection lasts, is another question. Usually, both the vacuum pump and a constriction ring are used together.
