Trichomoniasis I

Curable STDs - Infections

Trichomoniasis (popular name: trich)

The parasite causing trichomoniasis
(lat. trichomonas vaginalis)

1. What is it?
Trichomoniasis is common infection that is usually transmitted by sexual contact, but it is not impossible to get it also from toilet seats, wet towels, and clothes.

2. What causes it?
Trichomoniasis is caused by the single-celled protozoan parasite called
trichomonas vaginalis. It uses its whip-like tail to move and propel itself forward, and it thrives in warm and moist environments, especially inside the vagina, but also inside the urethra in males.

3. How is it transmitted?
Trichomoniasis is usually transmitted during vaginal intercourse: Females can infect males and vice versa. Females can also infect other females if their sex organs come into very close contact. Finally, since the trichomoniasis parasite can survive for a few hours outside the human body if it finds a moist and warm place, it may, in rare cases, be picked up from toilet seats, clothes or wet towels.
