Infestations

Curable STDs - Infestations

Two infestations are often transmitted by sexual contact: Pubic lice and scabies. Both of these STDs, while not really dangerous, are bothersome, and, in principle, they are easily cured. Even so, they are a health problem: The American National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) estimates that there are 3 million new cases annually in the USA alone. This would mean a little over one percent of the population. In many other countries with more cramped living conditions the numbers may well be much higher. Exact figures are hard to come by, since neither pubic lice nor scabies are reportable diseases. However, those affected may also have contracted other, more serious STDs and should therefore ask their doctors for a more thorough examination.
