节欲    Abstinence

通常因为信奉宗教的原因，许多人坚持认为对抗性传播疾病的最好措施是结婚之前的性节制和婚内的专一性。虽然这种论理说起来完全合乎逻辑，这种逻辑却绝少反映在人们的现实性行为之中。因为过去的时光不再重现，在每一个文化体系里和世界各个地区的无数男男女女们已经忘却了禁欲的呼吁。因而，性传播疾病始终在肆虐着，而且它们在今天仍然如此。所以，促进禁欲作为预防性传播疾病的措施是一场最艰难的斗争，并且正象所显示的那样，在高危行为的少数人群中实行这种措施从未成功。

这个小卡片由美国佛罗里州达州迈阿密罗马天主教大主教管区向青少年在一年一度的“纯洁日”上发放，它类似银行信用卡，持有者可以在上面签名
This small card is distributed to teenagers on an annual “chastity day” organized by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Miami, FL., USA. The card, resembling a bank card (ATM card) can be signed by the holder.

卡片翻译：“婚前节欲——我向上帝、向我自己、向我的家人、向我的未来配偶和向我的未来孩子承诺，依照上帝的旨意过一种纯洁的生活，直到进入神圣而又崇高的婚姻为止。”

Abstinence

Many people believe, usually for religious reasons, that the best protection against STDs is sexual abstinence before marriage and exclusivity within marriage. While such reasoning sounds perfectly logical, its logic has rarely been reflected in actual human sexual behavior. Since time immemorial, countless females and males in every culture and global region have ignored pleas to remain abstinent. Thus, STDs have always spread, and they still continue to do so today. Therefore, promoting sexual abstinence as a way to prevent STDs is an uphill fight at best, and, as experience shows, it never succeeds with more than a small minority of the people at risk.
