Some Tropical Venereal Diseases

5.5.3 SOME TROPICAL VENEREAL DISEASES

There are some other, less common, venereal diseases which deserve to be mentioned. Although they are found mainly in tropical countries, it may be useful to know about them in our age of increasing travel.

Chancroid

The chancroid, also known as "soft chancre", is a bacterial infection which results in one or several large, painful, and destructive ulcers within a few days. The disease can be effectively treated with antibiotics.

Granuloma Inguinaie

This is another bacterial infection which causes ulcers. It can also be treated effectively with antibiotics.

Lymphogranuloma Venereum

An infection caused by a virus. The disease produces an ulcer and a swelling of the lymph nodes in the groin. Effective treatment is possible.
