THIS BOOK HAS BEEN A DOZEN YEARS IN THE
making. The original impetus was in good measure a consequence of the intellectual curiosity aroused by my friends in college. Since that time my research has centered on the studies of other sociologists and my own work with young people. My debt to these persons is documented in this book. More recently, I am indebted to my former colleagues at the College of William and Mary for their help in my writing. My gratitude goes to R. Wayne Kernodle, Edwin Rhyne, and Christopher Waters, all of whom read the manuscript and gave me the benefit of their comments. My special thanks go to the Institute for Sex Research and in particular to Dr. Geb-hard and Dr. Martin who were kind enough to assemble some important calculations for me. Finally, my greatest debt is to my wife, Harriet, who gave much of her time and effort in helping to improve the form of the work and who gave innumerable insights regarding its content.
