Written by 170 leading sexologists in the respective countries and cultures, each lengthy entry explores such areas as heterosexual relationships, children, adolescents, adults, gender-conflicted persons, unconventional sexual patterns, contraceptions, sexually transmitted diseases, AIDS, sexual dysfunctions, and therapies. It also includes sexual issues for older persons and physically and mentally challenged individuals.

Among the renowned contributors are Igor S. Kon, a foremost expert on sexuality in Russia, and Fang-fu Ruan, a medical anthropologist from Beijing and author of a manual on sex education for the People’s Republic of China. The comprehensive section on the United States was produced by thirty-two experts working with fifteen consultants.

Robert T. Francoeur, Ph.D., A.C.S., is a fellow and past officer of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality. He is editor-in-chief of The Complete Dictionary of Sexology: New Expanded Edition, coauthor of The Scent of Eros: Mysteries of Odor in Human Sexuality (both published by Continuum), and author of some twenty-five books on various aspects of sexuality.

Timothy Perper, Ph.D., is the author of Sex Signals: The Biology of Love.

Ira L. Reiss, Ph.D., is past president of the International Academy of Sex Research.
