Short-term Lovers

Some American, European and, increasingly, Japanese women take their vacations in distant countries for the purpose of meeting a short-term lover, and for such a young man, his physical attributes are important. The preferred destinations of this so-called female sex tourism are Southern Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean, but some other regions with many unemployed or underemployed males are also becoming popular.
The women often travel alone and look for their exotic “vacation boyfriends” among the local hotel employees, waiters, bar keepers, gardeners, cab drivers, tour guides, life guards, beach attendants, souvenir sellers, etc. and, once they have found one, they reward him with dinner invitations, clothes, gifts, or plain cash. Some men in some countries, however, do not expect any compensation. For them, it is enough to have proved their masculinity and sexual prowess.
This is an indication that
the males rarely feel exploited or degraded by such an arrangement. Even when they accept gifts or money, they do not feel like prostitutes. Indeed, they may be envied by their their friends and gain in prestige. In short, this form of “sex trade” presents a special case and cannot simply be compared to the other forms of prostitution. However, the whole picture is increasingly being overshadowed by the high HIV/AIDS infection rate among males in the developing countries, especially in the Caribbean and Africa.

Destinations for female sex tourism
Women from several European countries, North America, Australia, and Japan (all colored yellow) look for short-term lovers in distant regions, especially in developing countries (red). Preferred destinations are Southern Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean, but recently Indonesia, Thailand and Fiji as well as some Latin American countries have also become popular. However, it should be remembered that male sex tourism is much more extensive. Indeed, in comparison, female sex tourism is insignificant.
