Stages of Development: Old Age

Sexual Response 2

The graph below illustrates the decline of one man’s sexual performance with advancing age. The document lists the number of various sexual outlets per year. It is especially instructive since this particular sexual life was untypical in many respects. Nevertheless, as the man grew older, his performance level began to resemble that of most other men of the same age.

Dr. Y: Chart of his sexual outlets from age 30 – 65
The newly married Dr. Y. was, at the age of 30, encouraged by Alfred C. Kinsey to keep track of his various sexual outlets by briefly noting the sources of his orgasms in a small pocket diary, a suggestion he scrupulously followed for thirty-five years. During this time, he was never seriously ill. He had several children and died in his 80’s still married to his first and only wife. As the chart shows, Dr. Y. had an unusually active sex life. However, even in his case, the decline of his sexual performance after the age of 50 is quite noticeable.
