1. Sexual Self-stimulation: History

Antiquity

Claudius Galenus
 (Galen)
(129-201 AD),
the greatest physician in ancient Rome,  recommended masturbation as a necessary health measure

In ancient times, it was often thought that involuntary orgasms occurred when an angel of the night, a spirit, or a demon visited people in their sleep. This could be a good or a bad thing, depending on the circumstances. Ancient Greek and Roman physicians believed that unreleased semen could become poisonous and therefore had to be ejaculated at regular intervals. If no partners were available, sexual self-stimulation would be a useful alternative. In either case, the person’s health would be preserved. On the other hand, the ancient Jews believed that semen should always be preserved for the purpose of procreation and never be “wasted”. Therefore, involuntary orgasms during sleep were regrettable, and masturbation was a serious offense.
