Problems of Tumescence The sexual response in both females and males begins with so-called excitement phase: The sex organs become tumescent, i.e. engorged with blood.
In the male, this will lead to the erection of the penis, in females to the lubrication of the vagina. Conversely, if there is no sexual excitement - and therefore no tumescence - there is no erection and no lubrication.
