HIV Antibody Test 1

Incurable STDs - Infections

How is it diagnosed? - HIV Antibody Test 1

Who should get tested?

  1. Blood donors are routinely tested for HIV antibodies, mainly for the protection of others. Surgery patients are also routinely tested for their own protection and that of their doctors. Other patients may have to be tested for diagnostic purposes, depending on their specific complaints. Pregnant women are tested for their own protection and that of their babies.

  2. People in general should consider getting tested if they
    • suffer from another STD such as genital herpes, chancroid, or syphilis,
    • had sexual contact with an HIV-infected person,
    • had sexual contact with an intravenous drug user,
    • had sexual contact with someone who also had other sexual partners.
