Causes of Intersexuality

Intersexuality - The Intersexual Spectrum

Causes of Intersexuality

As we have seen, there is a spectrum of atypical conditions between femaleness and maleness. Today, many of them are covered by the term “intersexuality”.
There are several possible causes for the various forms and degrees of intersexuality. Briefly summarized, they can be traced to three kinds of possible sources:

  1. Chromosomal,
  2. hormonal,
  3. environmental.

In ca. 25% of all cases, there is no exact diagnosis, and the cause remains unknown.

The present basic course cannot cover all intersexual conditions traceable to the different sources. Still, the following sections provide at least some general information on the best known forms of intersexuality.
