Intersexuality - The Intersexual Spectrum

Causes of Intersexuality - Environment

In addition to chromosomal and hormonal causes, there may also be environmental factors involved in producing intersexual conditions. Radiation, chemicals, and certain medications can negatively influence the growth of a fetus before birth. It is not always known, however, how exactly these factors work and how extensive a role they really play. In some cases, their influences are proven, in others merely suspected. However, they are now of increasing interest to researchers studying intersexuality. We know that radiation can affect the chromosomes, that some chemicals can disturb the natural balance of hormones, and that certain medications can cause very serious physical problems before and after birth.
