Abortion

Historical Notes

From ancient to modern times, abortion has been both a medical and a moral issue. While some physicians searched for safer abortion methods, others refused to perform abortions at all. Many religions have also always condemned abortion. At the same time, governments tried to prevent abortions by passing various restrictive or less restrictive laws, which, at various times, were vigorously or less vigorously enforced. In the course of the 20th century, many legislatures liberalized their anti-abortion laws. Still, even today, the issue has not been resolved, although many women around the world have now access to legal abortions in hospitals or in the doctor’s office.
