Methods of Contraception: Contraceptive Methods for Men

At this time, there are only four methods of contraception for men: Abstinence, withdrawal, condom, and sterilization. Several others are being tried in some countries, and they may become more widely available in the near future: Reversible forms of sterilization, and both hormonal and non-hormonal injections. Abstinence and withdrawal are undoubtedly the oldest methods. Indeed, the withdrawal method is already mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible. The greedy Onan did have intercourse with his brother’s widow, as the custom required. However, since he did not want her to produce new heirs, he always withdrew his penis from her vagina just before ejaculation. (Genesis, 38.8-10.) The condom, which is widely popular today, was invented only in modern times and not perfected until the early 20th century.
