Without the production of testosterone, the embyonic development will "automatically" take a turn towards the female. In other words: The female sex is the basic or primary sex. From the standpoint of evolutionary biology, it is also the older sex. The male sex can develop only if "something is added", i.e. if certain hormones help it along during certain periods during pregnancy. In mythological or poetic language:
