Artificial Insemination

5.1.3 ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION

Artificial insemination is a simple procedure in which a doctor uses a fine tube to inject semen into a woman's vagina close to the cervix. This has to be done during a woman's fertile days. A married couple may choose this method of achieving pregnancy in order to overcome certain fertility problems. The semen, which is obtained by masturbation, is usually that of the husband. However, if he should prove to be sterile the semen of an anonymous donor can be used. Such a donor is selected by the doctor and known only to him. In selecting the donor, the doctor normally tries to find a man whose physical characteristics resemble those of the husband, and whose medical history indicates good general health.
