Helping the Victims 3

Prohibited Sexual Behavior and Sexual Violence

Sexual Violence: Rape: Male Victims: Helping the Victims 3

For “straight” (heterosexual) male rape victims the trauma is often especially severe. As a result of the experience, they may begin to question their own sexual orientation. Thus, they may find the sexual aspect of the assault even more disturbing than the accompanying violence. In order to resolve their inner conflict, they need the help of knowledgeable and supportive counselors.
Actually,
all male rape victims need counseling, not only for psychological problems, but also in practical matters. First of all, they must be made to understand that “it was not their fault”, and that they are not to blame for what was done to them against their will. Secondly, their overall psychological stress has to be dealt with, and a process of healing has to be initiated and helped along. Families and friends also need to offer continuing unconditional support.
Finally, some very concrete worries have to be addressed, for example the possible infection with a
sexually transmitted disease. Some of these diseases do not show any immediate symptoms. This is especially true of an HIV/AIDS infection. Rape victims therefore need to be tested for a variety of possible infections, in some cases repeatedly and over a longer period of time. This also applies to victims of rape in prison. While prisoner rape does not constitute the majority of male rape cases, it is nevertheless in important social issue crying out to be addressed. It should be understood, however, that this type of rape is not a problem of homosexuality, because most prisoners have a heterosexual orientation. Instead, it is a widespread problem of physical violence in a closed institution. Quite clearly, every prison and detention facility is responsible for the physical safety of its inmates, a responsibility that is not always met. In many countries, there are now advocacy groups reminding the authorities of this obligation.

An American Organization fighting Prisoner Rape
This nation-wide organization is devoted to putting “an end to sexual violence against men, women, and youth in all forms of detention.” It provides access to numerous resources related to the topic.
