Problems of Tumescence The sexual response in both females and males begins with so-called excitement phase: The sex organs become tumescent, i.e. engorged with blood.
In the female, this will lead to the lubrication of the vagina, in males to the erection of the penis. Conversely, if there is no sexual excitement - and therefore no tumescence - there is no lubrication and no erection.
