Safer Sex - Historical Notes

Types of Guidelines
The original “safe sex guidelines” had been developed by and for the American male “gay” community. They had to be amended as soon as it became clear that many others were also infected and thus could infect others: “Straight” people of both sexes, intravenous drug users, and recipients of blood and blood products.

As a result, the guidelines changed over time. Eventually, there evolved three main types of “safe sex guidelines”:

1. General guidelines for the public at large.
2.
Specific guidelines for certain subgroups of the population.
3.
Simplified guidelines amounting to not much more than the advice to use condoms.

All three types of guidelines have proven helpful, depending on the context in which they were and are now being used.
