HIV/AIDS V

6. How is it treated?
At this time, there is no cure for HIV infection. However, various treatments are now available that can slow down the progression of the disease and thus not only prolong life, but also improve its quality. The aim is to suppress the spread of the virus inside the patient’s body by giving him antiretroviral medication (HIV belongs to the family of so-called retroviruses). This can be combined with other medications designed to suppress certain symptoms and to treat opportunistic infections as they occur. It is very important for patients to have regular check-ups, to eat healthy food, and to follow the prescribed medical regimen conscientiously. This may add many years to their lives. In the meantime, researchers continue to look for additional and perhaps even more effective antiretroviral treatments.

This graph illustrates one possible case. The various stages may be longer or shorter in other cases.
