Lower Abdominal Pain

Physical Problems in Females

Lower Abdominal Pain

Many women feel some pain in the lower abdomen from time to time, especially before or during their menstrual periods. This may very well be related to the  premenstrual syndrome (PMS). However, there are other possible causes, such as a sexually transmitted disease, an inflammation of the bladder (cystitis) or a problem with the kidneys or some of the internal sex organs. The pain can also be symptom of endometriosis, or it may originate from the digestive tract (stomach, bowels). In some cases, the pain is sharp and easy to identify, in other cases it is unspecific and hard to locate. However, a sudden, severe lower abdominal pain should prompt any woman to seek medical help, if only to rule out a serious, possibly dangerous condition.
In any case, it is useful for all women to be familiar with their own sex organs and menstruation pattern. On this basis, they can more easily decide when to see a doctor and how to assist in a correct diagnosis.
