Intersexuality - Dealing with Intersexuality

Continuing Changes

In recent decades, intersexuality research has made considerable advances. Thanks also to intersex advocacy groups, the medical treatment of intersexual conditions has become less dogmatic and more circumspect. In any case, there is now a general trend in medicine toward granting patients more rights and to let them have a say in the medical decisions that affect them. Exploring the internet, many patients have also become more knowledgeable than ever before. As a result, there has been an improvement in the doctor-patient relationship as well as a change in medical practice. All of this also applies to intersexual patients.
Nevertheless, with regard to intersexuality, we are still in a stage of transition. In spite of increased global communication, many “traditionalists” still cling to outmoded concepts, and many intersexual persons and their families remain isolated and uninformed. In order to bridge the still existing gaps, many steps are being taken. Especially promising are these:

  • New guidelines for dealing with intersexual persons have been proposed and presented for discussion.
  • Intersex support groups are enlarging and updating their web sites, offering more information and more detailed advice.

The following sections discuss some examples.
