Medication and Drugs A variety of legal and illegal drugs can affect the human sexual response. Some may improve the response in some cases, but most have a negative effect, especially when used over longer periods of time. The classic example is alcohol which may have a welcome relaxing effect at first, but then quickly leads to impairment. As the porter in Shakespeare's "Macbeth" accurately observes: "Drinking provokes the desire, but takes away the performance." The following chart summarizes the effects of the most common drugs or medications on the sexual response. Please, note, however: In any concrete case, very much depends the underlying disease or problem being treated by a particular drug and on the dose being taken.
