为了帮助人们解决性功能障碍，性治疗师需要确切知道障碍是什么。简单地询问病人或客户姓名或他们的症状，尽管始终是必要的，却是不够的。许多男女不明白他们自身的生理机能，会误解或曲解自己的症状或有不切实际的期望。所以：除非通过提供知识或提供一些简单的建议就能够容易解决所面临的问题，尚需要详细的诊断。
诊断通常经过两个步骤：

1. 身体检查
2. 详细问诊(“采集既往性生活史”)

The Treatment of Sexual Dysfunctions - Diagnosis

In order to help people with their sexual problems, therapists need to know what exactly these problems are. Simply asking the patients or clients to name or define their problems - while always necessary - is usually not sufficient. Many women and men do not understand the functioning of their own bodies, misunderstand or misconstrue their symptoms or have unrealistic expectations. Therefore: Unless the problem can easily be solved by giving information or making some simple suggestions, a detailed diagnosis is necessary.
The diagnosis usually proceeds in two steps:

1. A physical examination
2. A detailed interview ("taking a sex history")
