Problems of Tumescence: Lack of Erection
- Treatment Today, tumescence
problems in men can be successfully
treated in many cases. That is to say:
Most men no longer have to accept
regularly absent or weak erections of
the penis as their personal, unavoidable
fate. Sex therapists now offer a variety
of proven physical, psychological, and
behavioral treatments. They are
discussed in the following sections.
However, first this note of caution:

An erect penis is no miracle
cure for all sexual
problems. Any sexual
relationship involves a
great number of personal,
social, and cultural
factors, and some of them
may be much more important.
Indeed, a woman's
perspective on sexual
intercourse may be quite
different form that of her
partner. Each woman's sexual
desires and expectations are
unique, and on the
psychosocial level there is
no such thing as a
spontaneous, universal,
standardized response. A
woman may, above all, want
emotional involvement, a
sense of security and
acceptance. Men are often
greatly concerned with the
build-up and release of
pelvic tension, but women
may need much more for their
sexual satisfaction than
mere physical "functioning".
