除了常規身體檢查以外，許多性治療師使用所謂的性科學檢查(sexological examination)，即探測病人或客戶的性反應。如果性治療師不是醫生，他們通常請婦科醫生會診，因為這種類型的檢查對女病人或女客戶更為重要。然而，大多數男性非常瞭解他們自己的性反應，許多女性卻不熟悉自己的性器官機能。性科學檢查能幫助他們及其性治療師瞭解他們的性反應。

In addition to a standard medical examination, many therapists use a so-called sexological examination, i.e. they explore the patient's or client's sexual responsiveness. If the therapists are not physicians, they usually ask for the help of a gynecologist, because this type of examination is usually more important in the case of women. While most men know their own sexual response quite well, many women are unfamiliar with the functioning of their sex organs. The sexological examination can help them and the therapists in understanding  their sexual responsiveness.
