男女性反應始於所謂的性興奮期：
性器官逐漸膨脹，即性器官充血。
在女性，性器官充血會導致陰道潤滑；在男性，導致陰莖勃起。反過來，如果無性興奮-並由此就沒有膨脹-由此就沒有陰道潤滑和陰莖勃起。

Tumescence
The sexual response in both females and
males begins with so-called excitement
phase:
The sex organs become
tumescent, i.e. engorged with blood.In the female,
this will lead to the lubrication of the
vagina, in males to the erection of the
penis. Conversely, if there is no sexual
excitement - and therefore no tumescence
- there is no lubrication and no
erection.
