Google Ngrams

A new service by Google allows readers to follow the rise and fall of concepts across 5 million books and 500 years. When you enter one or several phrases into the Google Books Ngram Viewer, it displays a graph showing how those phrases have occurred in a corpus of books (e.g., “American English”, "British English", "English Fiction", "German", “Spanish” etc.) over the selected years. You can refine your search by clicking on various shorter periods listed below the graph. Within these shorter periods, you will get lists of the actual works examined. Of course, one has to understand the limitations of this unique offer, and one has to be careful in interpreting the graphs. Nevertheless, they can be of some help to those who are interested in the historical dimensions of scientific topics. For the purpose of illustration, we are providing a few samples in English to go with some of our online courses:
